How to Perform Umrah: A Step-by-Step Guide

Umrah is one of the most beloved acts of worship in Islam, often referred to as the “minor pilgrimage.” While it is not obligatory like Hajj, performing Umrah brings immense spiritual rewards and purification of the soul. For Muslims, the journey to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah for Umrah represents a significant moment of spiritual reflection, devotion, and closeness to Allah (SWT).

In this article, we will take you through the step-by-step process of how to perform Umrah, with clear instructions based on Quran and Hadith. Whether you are preparing for your first Umrah or seeking to refresh your understanding, this guide will help ensure your pilgrimage is performed correctly and with the right intentions.

The Significance of Umrah in Islam

Umrah holds a special place in the heart of every Muslim. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged believers to perform Umrah, as it serves as an expiation for sins and brings spiritual renewal. He said:

“The performance of Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous one.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

While Hajj is only performed during specific times of the Islamic year, Umrah can be performed at any time, making it accessible to Muslims worldwide seeking to reconnect with their faith.

Preparation for Umrah

Before embarking on this sacred journey, certain preparations are essential to ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling experience:

  1. Purify Your Intentions (Niyyah):
As with any act of worship, it is important to make your intention solely for the sake of Allah. The intention should be clear, pure, and focused on fulfilling this act of devotion.
  2. Ensure Financial and Physical Readiness:
Umrah is a physical journey, so it’s essential to be in good health and well-prepared for the physical demands of the pilgrimage. Additionally, ensure your travel and accommodation expenses are paid for through halal means.
  3. Learning the Rituals of Umrah:
Educate yourself about the key rituals and steps involved in performing Umrah. This knowledge will help you carry out the pilgrimage with confidence and devotion.
  4. Ihram Garment:
Men should prepare their Ihram garments, consisting of two simple white cloths, while women can wear any modest and clean clothing, ensuring the entire body is covered except the face and hands.

Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Umrah

Now, let’s dive into the steps of performing Umrah, from the moment you begin your journey to completing this blessed act of worship.

Step 1: Enter the State of Ihram

Ihram is the sacred state that a pilgrim must enter before performing Umrah. It symbolizes purity, humility, and devotion. Here’s how you enter Ihram:

  1. When and Where to Enter Ihram:
You should enter the state of Ihram before crossing the designated boundary known as Miqat, which varies depending on where you are traveling from. For example, if you are flying into Jeddah, you will enter Ihram before landing in Makkah.
  2. Perform Ghusl:
Before donning the Ihram, take a full body purification (ghusl) as per the Sunnah, cleansing yourself physically and spiritually for the journey ahead.
  3. Wear Ihram:
For men, this means wearing two white unstitched cloths, one wrapped around the waist and the other covering the shoulders. Women may wear modest and clean clothing that adheres to Islamic guidelines of modesty.
  4. Recite Talbiyah:
After entering Ihram, recite the Talbiyah with the intention of performing Umrah: “Labbayka Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk. Innal hamda wan ni’mata laka wal mulk, la shareeka lak.”
Translation: “Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise, grace, and dominion are Yours, and You have no partner.”
  5. Make Your Niyyah (Intention):
With a pure heart, make the intention for Umrah, stating that you are performing this act solely for the sake of Allah.

Step 2: Perform Tawaf Around the Kaaba

Tawaf is the act of circumambulating (walking in circles) around the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, located within Masjid al-Haram. It signifies the unity of Muslims in worship of the One true God.

  1. Begin Tawaf:
Upon entering Masjid al-Haram, head towards the Kaaba and begin Tawaf at the corner of the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad). If possible, touch or kiss the Black Stone. If not, raise your right hand towards it while saying:
    “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar”
Translation: “In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.”
  2. Make Seven Circuits:
Walk around the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. During Tawaf, engage in heartfelt supplication, remembrance of Allah (dhikr), and recitation of the Quran.
  3. Conclude Tawaf:
Upon completing the seventh circuit, proceed to the station of Ibrahim (Maqam Ibrahim) and offer two units of prayer (raka’ah) as a Sunnah of Tawaf.

Step 3: Drink Zamzam Water

After performing Tawaf, it is Sunnah to drink from the blessed Zamzam water, which is readily available within the Haram. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.” (Ibn Majah)

Make a supplication before drinking and ask Allah for healing, mercy, or anything your heart desires.

Step 4: Perform Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah

Sa’i symbolizes the struggle and perseverance of Hajar (AS), the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah in search of water for her son, Ismail (AS).

  1. Start at Safa:
Begin at the hill of Safa, face the Kaaba, and make dua (supplication) for whatever is in your heart. Then, walk towards Marwah.
  2. Walk Seven Times:
Walk back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwah a total of seven times, reciting prayers and remembering Allah. While walking, reflect on Hajar’s faith and persistence, and make dua for your own journey.

Step 5: Cut or Shave Hair (Tahalul)

After completing Sa’i, men should either shave their heads (recommended) or trim their hair. Women should trim a small portion of their hair (about the length of a fingertip). This act symbolizes the completion of Umrah and a return to a state of normality after the sacred state of Ihram.

Conclusion: A Journey of Faith and Renewal

Performing Umrah is a deeply personal and spiritual experience. Every step, from entering Ihram to cutting your hair, is meant to cleanse you of sins, bring you closer to Allah, and offer an opportunity for spiritual renewal. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described the reward for a correctly performed Umrah, saying:

“An accepted Umrah is a great reward, and between one Umrah and another, all sins are forgiven.” (Bukhari)

Umrah may be shorter than Hajj, but its impact on the soul is profound. It teaches humility, patience, and devotion, reminding believers of their purpose in life: to worship Allah and seek His pleasure.

May Allah accept the Umrah of all those who embark on this blessed journey, and may it serve as a means of purification and closeness to the Almighty. Ameen.
